The raiders, led by the Aden O‚ÄôBrien stable, were left wanting after setting the early pace, while Cummings proved yet again that he is one of the greatest trainers in the land. 2007 Melbourne Cup Winner

Spring's highlight event lived up to all expectations. One time favourite, Efficient ($23.29), trained by Graeme Rogerson and ridden by Michael Rodd, made a surging late run from the outside to defeat Purple Moon ($1.82) and Mahler ($4.09). The striking grey stayer's had struggled with mediocre form until the race, but he peaked at the right time to claim the Melbourne Cup.

2006 Melbourne Cup Winner

The winner of the Melbourne Cup (2006) was Delta Blues, ridden by Yasunari Iwata. Delta Blues is owned, trained and ridden by a Japanese team, confirming that the Melbourne Cup is truly an international race on the global racing calendar. Other internationally trained horses to have won the race in recent years include Vintage Crop and Media Puzzle, both of whom were trained by the Irish master Dermot Weld.
